THE DEMOB DAY BY HOVHANNES ISHKHANYAN

Short stories/ Self-published 2011

The Demob Day is a record of the life of young men through their military service. The stories represent the real experience of the author, some real names mixed with fictitious stories and characters. Some stories start with quite documentary descriptions and sound like witness accounts and at some point of the story just surprise the reader with absurd developments and even impossible fantasies. The book has been accepted with huge criticism and scandal when some “respected” cultural figures demanded the Ministry of Culture to ban the book. This was followed by a rally organized by contemporary writers who reminded about the publishing freedom and freedom of speech in general. The book could not be banned but some bookstores refused to sell it.
