Christopher Atamian, a New York based writer, literary critic, film director and producer, issued an article on Armenia’s contemporary literary scene by a respectable literary journal LA Review of Books.
“These young talents — Aram Pachyan, Anna Davtyan, Hovhannes Tekgyozyan, Armen Ohanyan, and the others touched upon below (in the article) — were mere children when Armenia gained independence; thus, Soviet rule never had a major impact on their writing. Linguistically experimental, they successfully play with both form and content. Part Beat, part Nouveau Roman, part feminist lit, their work is often critical toward the state, touching upon previously banned topics such as sexuality, war, and crime, as well as more personal issues such as the search for identity and self-discovery.”
Comparing the writers to Marvel and DC superheroes guided by a super-agent, referring to the founder of ARI Literary Agency Arevik Ashkharoyan was a great trick to introduce Armenia’s literary field to the foreign audience. Christopher’s keen and precise description of the writers and their literary pieces are a fresh view from an outsider and at the same the author highly values the work that we do and states that we are moving into the right direction.
