THE THIRD SEX BY JEAN-CHAT TEKGYOZYAN

Novel/ Edge Publishing House 2019/ 172 pages

The four chapters of the novel present four women protagonists. They all are actresses of four different generations working at the same theater, in different time periods – from soviet rule to the modern days. Their stories crossover throughout the novel.

The tradition of involving a woman as a protagonist of the literary work in Armenia has been always mainly limited to the heroic characters of women, mothers, wives. The author has positioned the women in the book as individuals with complex inner world, independent and striving for happiness. They all live under different regimes, all oppressive and disrespectful towards women, and especially women of courage, courage to be SOMEONE in their societies. They are being honored when they are next to a MAN, but when they stand alone, they become an easy target for the society.

Another central topic is the confrontation between the intellectuals and the ruling system. In the soviet era artists, unfortunately, have always been used as a tool to control the masses, and the novel comes to prove that the situation hasn’t changed much in out days. But the book tells the stories of those who tried to stop the harsh state machine and faced the dramatic outcomes.

The four chapters of the book speak in four different women voices and tell their stories, diverse but all about one and the same idea – strong women in the society have always been regarded as the Third Sex.
